Duncanville ISD Athletics

The mission of the Athletic Department at Duncanville ISD is to ensure that athletics plays a key
role in the overall educational experience of students. Through athletic programs, students have
the opportunity to grow into responsible individuals by learning essential life skills such as fair
play, sportsmanship, and teamwork. These activities also highlight the value of hard work and
perseverance in achieving success, which are important principles for personal and academic
development. By participating in sports, students can cultivate both physical and character
strength, contributing to their overall education.

Currently, Duncanville ISD boasts approximately 1,900 students involved in athletics across
grades seven through twelve. To support these students, the district has a dedicated athletic
staff of over ninety positions, including coaches, athletic trainers, and other support personnel,
all working together to ensure the success of the athletic programs.

For students in grades seven and eight, Duncanville ISD offers football, basketball, volleyball,
track, and tennis. As students move into high school (grades nine through twelve), the district
provides a broader range of sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, track, cross-country,
baseball, softball, soccer, swimming, golf, and tennis. This variety of athletic opportunities helps
to engage students, foster teamwork, and encourage personal growth.

The Bill Savage Athletic Complex, situated on the Duncanville High School campus, is a
state-of-the-art facility designed to support the district’s athletic programs. The complex features
a 10,000-seat artificial turf football stadium with adjoining grass practice fields, offering ample
space for football and other events. In addition, it includes a natatorium for swimming, baseball
and softball fields, and a twelve-court tennis facility, providing students with top-notch spaces for
a variety of sports.

The Sandra Meadows Memorial Arena, which opened in December 2003, serves as the primary
venue for basketball and volleyball. Inside the arena, there is a 2,000-seat competition court,
two full-sized competition gyms, two physical education gyms, a cutting-edge sports medicine
facility, and two weight rooms. These facilities cater to the diverse needs of the athletes,
enhancing their training and competition experiences.

Additionally, a new field house, located adjacent to the football stadium and opened in March
2004, provides housing for the football team, along with a 6,000 square-foot weight room
available for all sports. This expansive and well-equipped complex plays a significant role in
supporting the development of Duncanville ISD’s student-athletes.

The district houses three athletic training facilities to serve various sports, and employs four
full-time licensed athletic trainers. The main AT facility, located in the Sandra Meadows
Memorial Arena, contains separate areas for taping, examinations, and the rehabilitation of
athletic injuries. Other training rooms are located at the high school football stadium and Old
Panther Field. A central middle school training room facility is located at Kennemer Middle
School to serve the needs of Duncanville’s middle school athletes.

Two of Duncanville ISD’s athletic facilities have earned national recognition for their outstanding
features and contributions to high school sports. Baseball America, a renowned national
magazine, ranked the Duncanville Panther Baseball Stadium as the 5th Best High School
Ballpark Facility in the nation, highlighting the stadium’s top-tier amenities and the program’s
success. Additionally, USA TODAY, a prominent national daily newspaper, named the Sandra
Meadows Memorial Arena as one of the Top 10 Great Places to Watch High School Basketball,
recognizing it as a premier venue for basketball events.

In addition to these celebrated facilities, Old Panther Field, located on Freeman Street, serves
as the home for the Panther soccer teams. Duncanville ISD also provides additional athletic
spaces, with football and baseball fields, as well as running tracks, available at the district’s
middle schools, ensuring that younger athletes have access to excellent training and
competition venues. These facilities collectively contribute to the high standard of athletic
development in Duncanville ISD.

Duncanville Independent School District is widely recognized across the nation for its elite
athletic programs. In May 2005, Sports Illustrated ranked Duncanville ISD 24th in the nation out
of 38,000 high schools, highlighting the district’s exceptional athletic achievements and
commitment to excellence.
